I am a creator, showrunner, and core cast member of Roleplay Retcon, a podcast that remakes infamous flop movies using roleplaying and storytelling games. Each movie is remade as a mini-series with a new guest, a new game, and a featured indie band on the soundtrack! The other core cast members are my talented friends Jensie and Alex.

We take turns “directing” remakes. My style is to use the original movie’s premise as a jumping-off point, then make the story my own. I have a rundown of some of my favorite remakes below, or you can hit that LISTEN button and hear for yourself!

  • Super Mario Bros. (1993) with Charles Cheez and Challenger Deep. Our version added Portia, the Mario Sister, but kept the wild citypunk vibe of the original movie.

  • Pixels (2015) with Kyle Taylor and Foot Pound Force. Our version replaced the characters and focused the story's themes to be more about video games. We also included titles and characters from all eras of gaming, not just '80s arcade.

  • Meet Dave (2008), with music by Mateja Jezdic. This is my favorite mini-series we've done so far. We played Everyone is John, a game about playing voices inside a man's head who vie for control of his body and struggle to do even mundane things. I changed that problematic premise to adapt Meet Dave, a movie about tiny aliens blending in on Earth in a mech disguised as a human.

  • Small Soldiers (1998) with Jess Geyer and Jonathan Coulton. My version made the villain a vengeful Abraham Lincoln toy who hated kids for not playing with him. He manufactures a war by drumming up propaganda and restricting access to the toys' battery recharge station. Three toys race against the clock to build an army of their own and get the power back to everyone.
